Over a 7 day period culminating in the Canada Day long weekend, the York Regional Police removed 26 impaired drivers from our roadways and charged 126 distracted drivers.
According to policy, twenty-six drivers were charged with impaired-related driving offences between Monday, June 26 2017, and Monday, July 3, 2017. Twenty-three drivers were charged for being impaired by alcohol, two drivers were charged with being impaired by drugs and one driver was charged with failing to provide a breath sample. Twelve of those drivers were stopped by officers conducting general patrol or at RIDE spot checks, four drivers were arrested after being involved in collisions and 10 impaired drivers were stopped as a result of calls from concerned citizens.
Citizens of York Region are also asked to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 through the Safe Roads . . . Your Call Program. Members of the community are asked to call if they see dangerous driving or behaviors on the road that could jeopardize the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
