On August 16, 2022 it was reported by the Ontario Provincial Police, that a motorcyclist was seriously injured when they hit a tote container that fell from another vehicle on Highway 401 in Toronto’s east end. First and foremost, we are sending our thoughts to this rider as they may have a long road of recovery ahead of them.

This is also an opportunity to remind drivers how important it is to secure your load on your vehicle properly to avoid any unnecessary collisions. The safe loading of vehicles and securing of the load is vitally important in preventing injury to people and damage to property that can arise from the loss of a load. You can also be held responsible if something falls off of your vehicle. If your unsecured load causes property damage, injuries and/or scatters debris and litter, you can be fined and even face a lawsuit.

Here are tips that you must keep in mind when securing your load:

Tie your load down using rope, netting, straps or chains.
Put lighter items lower and place heavier items on top to help keep them in place and secure the heavy items directly to your vehicle.
Don’t overload your vehicle.
Double check that your load is secure.
Your brake lights, signal lights and running lights must be kept visible at all times.
If the view from your inside rear-view mirror is blocked, you must attach an outside rear-view mirror to both sides of your vehicle.
If your load overhangs your vehicle, attach a red flag to the end of the load.
Use cargo netting or a tarp on top of your lead to stop fly-aways and make it easier to secure.
Never attach a strap to a plastic part of your vehicle (including bumpers) – you should always attach straps to a metal point.
Always check your load by pushing and pulling on each individual item and adjust if necessary.
Follow the speed on highways as speed increases the risk of items shifting and possibly coming loose.
If you hear any rattling noises while driving, pull over when it’s safe to do so and check your load.
Be extra cautious when turning, stopping, accelerating or going under bridges.

If your load comes loose while driving:

Slow down and pull over as soon as possible. Put your hazards on!
It may not be safe to retrieve your cargo if it’s in the middle of the road or highway so be cautious.
If the loss of your load caused an accident (injury or property damage) you should call the police immediately.

Remember you will be held responsible for an unsecured load on your vehicle. It can result in fines and even a lawsuit if someone is hurt or has their property damaged. Always double check your load to make sure it is secure before you hit the road.

Motorcycle Accident on Highway 401 on August 16, 2022

There are reports of a serious motorcycle accident on August 16, 2022 on Highway 401 near Meadowvale Road in Scarborough. This incident was the result of a large 4x4 container falling off another vehicle on the highway 401. Unfortunately, the motorcycle collided with this fallen object, resulting in serious life-threatening injuries for the motorcyclist.

This motorcycle crash occurred in the eastbound express lanes of Highway 401 around 1 p.m. on August 16, 2022. The OPP indicated that they have located the vehicle the container came from.

This is an unfortunate incident that could have been avoided if the container was properly secured to the vehicle. When loads are not properly secured, they can often result in serious injuries. Our lawyers have represented people injured in accidents where loads were not properly secured.

Motorcyclist Killed in Minto Ontario Crash

There are reports of a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a minivan in Minto Ontario on July 5, 2013. Sadly, the rider of the motorcycle, a man from Harriston died as a result of his injuries.

First and foremost, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who tragically lost his life in this Minto motorcycle accident.

Wellington County OPP were investigating the cause of the motorcycle and minivan accident.
